Jack Clark, nicknamed “Jack the Ripper,” was one of the most feared right-handed power hitters of his generation. Operating as a premier middle-of-the-order threat from the mid-1970s through the early 1990s, he combined elite raw power with a highly disciplined eye at the plate, anchoring the lineups of several legendary National and American League franchises.
Teams: San Francisco Giants (1975–1984), St. Louis Cardinals (1985–1987), New York Yankees (1988), San Diego Padres (1989–1990), Boston Red Sox (1991–1992)
Primary Accolades: 4× All-Star (1978, 1979, 1985, 1987), 2× Silver Slugger Award (1985, 1987)
Clark broke into the majors with the Giants, quickly establishing himself as a foundational star. In 1978, he put together a spectacular 26-game hitting streak and drove in 98 runs, earning his first All-Star nod and cementing his reputation as an elite young slugger on the West Coast.
Traded to the St. Louis Cardinals ahead of the 1985 season, Clark provided the heavy artillery Whitey Herzog’s speed-oriented roster desperately needed. His defining career moment came in Game 6 of the 1985 NLCS, when he hit a dramatic, towering three-run home run off Dodgers closer Tom Niedenfuer in the ninth inning to clinch the National League pennant for St. Louis.
Jack Clark shares this 1977 Topps multi-player “Rookies Outfielders card with Ruppert Jones, Lee Mazzilli and Dan Thomas.
