Andre Nolan Dawson, often known by his nicknames “the Hawk” or “Awesome Dawson,” is a former professional baseball outfielder who had a distinguished 21-season career in Major League Baseball (MLB). He primarily played for the Montreal Expos and Chicago Cubs, but also spent time with the Boston Red Sox and Florida Marlins.

He made his MLB debut on September 11, 1976. In 1977, he was named the National League Rookie of the Year. Throughout his career, he was an 8-time All-Star, won 8 Gold Glove Awards for his defensive excellence, and 4 Silver Slugger Awards for his hitting.

One of the most notable seasons of his career was in 1987, his first year with the Chicago Cubs, where he famously signed a blank contract and asked the Cubs to pay him what they thought he was worth. That year, he led the league with 49 home runs and 137 RBIs, earning him the National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award, despite playing for a last-place team. Dawson was known as a “five-tool player” – excelling in hitting for average, hitting for power, running, fielding, and throwing. Despite enduring 12 knee surgeries throughout his career, he amassed impressive statistics: 2,774 hits, 438 home runs, 1,591 RBIs, and 314 stolen bases. He is one of only a few players in MLB history to achieve both 400 home runs and 300 stolen bases.

In recognition of his outstanding career, Andre Dawson was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010 on his ninth year of eligibility. His Hall of Fame plaque depicts him with a Montreal Expos cap.

Andre Dawson shares this 1977 Topps “Rookies Outfielders” card with Gene Richards, John Scott and Denny Walling.

Did Your Know?  Andre Dawson actually began his college career at Florida A&M on a football scholarship as a wide receiver, only switching full-time to baseball after a severe knee injury shifted his athletic path. Later in life, he traded the outfield for a completely different second career, graduating from mortuary science school and opening his own family-run funeral home in Florida.
