Omar Renán Moreno Quintero is a former Major League Baseball (MLB) center fielder who played for 12 seasons, primarily known for his time with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was a key member of the Pirates’ 1979 World Series championship team.
Moreno was renowned for his exceptional speed, which made him a significant threat on the basepaths. He led the National League in stolen bases twice, with 71 in 1978 and 77 in 1979. In 1980. As the starting center fielder and leadoff hitter for the “We Are Family” Pirates, Moreno played a crucial role in their 1979 World Series victory over the Baltimore Orioles.
After eight seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1975–1982), he went on to play for the Houston Astros (1983), New York Yankees (1983–1985), Kansas City Royals (1985), and Atlanta Braves (1986).
After retiring from baseball, Moreno returned to his home country of Panama. He and his wife, Sandra, established the Omar Moreno Foundation, a youth baseball charity focused on underprivileged children in Panama. He also served as the manager of the Panamanian National Team for the 2003 Baseball World Cup, where they won a Silver Medal, and briefly coached for the Pirates in 2018.
