Tony Armas was a powerful and prolific outfielder who served as one of the premier home run threats in the American League during the late 1970s and 1980s. Known for his aggressive swing, tremendous arm, and ability to drive in runs in bunches, he anchored the outfields of both the Oakland Athletics and the Boston Red Sox during the peak of his career.
Teams: Pittsburgh Pirates (1976), Oakland Athletics (1977–1982), Boston Red Sox (1983–1986), California Angels (1987–1989)
Primary Accolades: 2× All-Star (1981, 1984), Silver Slugger Award (1984), AL Home Run Leader (1981, 1984), AL RBI Leader (1984)
After coming to the Athletics in a multi-player trade from Pittsburgh, Armas blossomed into a central figure of Billy Martin’s “Billyball” teams. In the strike-shortened 1981 season, he tied for the American League lead with 22 home runs, matching Dwight Evans, Eddie Murray, and Bobby Grich.
Traded to Boston ahead of the 1983 season, Armas found Fenway Park’s layout perfectly suited to his right-handed power. His absolute peak arrived in 1984, when he paced all of Major League Baseball by smashing 43 home runs and driving in 123 runs.
Armas was a vital component of the 1986 Boston Red Sox lineup that captured the American League pennant. Though injuries began to limit his playing time toward the end of his career, his veteran presence helped steady a dynamic Boston outfield alongside Jim Rice and Dwight Evans.
Tony Armas shares this 1977 Topps multi-player “Rookies Outfielders card with Steve Kemp, Carlos Lopez and Gary Woods.

Did You Know? Before making it to the big leagues, a teenage Tony Armas was signed out of Venezuela for a mere $4,000 signing bonus and was so unfamiliar with English or American customs that he survived his first few weeks in the minor leagues by pointing at menu pictures and eating nothing but hamburgers.
