Dwight Evans, nicknamed “Dewey,” was one of the most complete and durable outfielders of his generation. Spending 19 of his 20 Major League seasons with the Boston Red Sox, Evans roamed the right field expanse at Fenway Park with a defensive grace and a throwing arm that struck absolute terror into opposing baserunners.
Drafted by Boston in 1969, Evans burst onto the scene in late 1972 and cemented his role during the Red Sox’ historic 1975 pennant run. His defensive reputation was instantaneous: he took home 8 Gold Glove Awards, a metric topped only by Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays among right fielders. His flat-line throw from the deep right-field corner to cut down Ken Griffey Sr. in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series remains an iconic postseason visual.
As the late ’70s shifted into the 1980s, Evans completely re-engineered his approach at the plate under the guidance of hitting coach Walt Hriniak. He adopted a deep crouch, incorporated a high home-run stroke, and mastered strike-zone discipline.
Over his 20-year career, Evans earned 3 All-Star selections, 2 Silver Slugger awards, and retired with 2,446 hits, 1,391 walks, and 385 home runs.
Dwight Evans’s official rookie card resides in the 1973 Topps high-number series. He shares the “Rookie Outfielders” banner with Alonza Bumbry and Charlie Spikes. Because this card sits at the very end of the 1973 production run, it was printed in much lower quantities than earlier series commons.
