Originally signed by the San Francisco Giants in 1969, Milbourne made his Major League debut with the Houston Astros in 1974. He quickly proved his worth by hitting .279 in 112 games, earning a selection to the 1974 Topps All-Star Rookie Team. Milbourne became a foundational piece for the expansion Seattle Mariners starting in 1977, where he secured the franchise’s first-ever game-winning hit on April 8, 1977. He had his most productive offensive seasons in Seattle, including a 1979 campaign where he notched a career-high 99 hits and batted .278.

In 1981, he was traded to the New York Yankees, where he stepped up in a big way during the strike-shortened season, batting .313 in 61 games and playing in the 1981 World Series. The 1982 season perfectly captures Milbourne’s career as a high-demand utility asset. He managed to play for three different American League teams in a single calendar year: Started the year with the Yankees (14 games), traded to the Minnesota Twins in May (29 games) and then traded to the Cleveland Indians in July (82 games, where he hit .275).

He eventually circled back to both the Yankees and the Mariners before playing his final MLB game in late 1984.
