When you look at your historical roster builds, Foote’s career is defined by an absolute lightning strike of a rookie season, followed by a transition into a highly respected, veteran presence for multiple iconic franchises.
After a brief late-season cup of coffee in 1973, you saw Foote take over the everyday catching duties for Montreal in 1974. He put together a masterful rookie campaign, blasting 14 home runs and driving in 60 runs over 126 games. His performance earned him a well-deserved spot on the 1974 Topps All-Star Rookie Team.
Injury struggles and the emergence of future Hall of Famer Gary Carter eventually shifted Foote’s role in Montreal. In 1977, he was dealt to the Philadelphia Phillies, followed by a highly popular stint with the Chicago Cubs (1979–1981). Stepping in as the primary catcher for the 1980 Cubs, you watched Foote enjoy a spectacular offensive renaissance. He launched a career-high 16 home runs and drove in 54 runs in just 114 games, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous hitting catchers in the National League that summer.
He wrapped up his playing days in 1982 after a late-career stint with the New York Yankees. Over 887 Major League games, Foote accumulated 595 hits, 90 home runs, and 330 RBIs.
The official introduction to Foote on cardboard is in this highly sought-after 1974 Topps set. He highlights a four-player “Rookie Catchers” grid, positioned in the top-left quadrant sporting a crisp, classic Montreal Expos tricolor pinwheel cap. He shares this card with Tom Lundstedt, Charlie Moore and Sergio Robles.
