Drafted in the first round (17th overall) by the Twins back in 1967, Steve Brye was a fixture of the classic 1970s Topps baseball card sets. While he played as a spare outfielder and late-innings defensive replacement for chunks of his career, he earned the everyday starting center field job for the Twins in 1974, which became his definitive career year.

Brye is also famously remembered for his role in one of the tightest, most controversial batting title races in MLB history. On the final day of the 1976 season, Kansas City Royals teammates George Brett and Hal McRae were neck-and-neck for the American League batting crown. In Brett’s final at-bat, he hit a fly ball to left field where Brye was playing. Brye misjudged the ball (or, as McRae and critics later argued, hesitated/let it drop), and it bounced over his head for an inside-the-park home run. The hit secured the batting title for Brett. McRae, who was on deck, was furious, leading to intense media scrutiny over the play. Brye always maintained that the tough stadium turf and tricky wind caused him to misplay the ball cleanly.

Steve Brye shares this 1972 Topps “Twins Rookie Stars” card #28 with Bob Gebhard and Hal Haydel.
