Jim York made his debut for Kansas City in 1970, but his absolute breakout arrived as a cornerstone of the Royals’ bullpen over the next two summers.
York became a premier high-leverage weapon for manager Bob Lemon in 1971, appearing in 53 games out of the bullpen. He logged 93.1 innings of relief, pitching his way to a sharp 2.89 ERA, a 5–5 record, and 9 saves (leading the Royals’ staff). He backed up his stellar rookie year with another heavy workload in 1972, taking the mound 49 times, eating up 72 innings, and securing a career-best 5 wins alongside an excellent 2.75 ERA.
Following the 1972 season, the Royals packaged York in a major 4-player trade to the Houston Astros in exchange for cash and infielder Fred Patek. York immediately stepped into the Astros’ bullpen rotation, appearing in 43 games in 1973 and recording a career-high 10 saves.
He later pitched for the New York Yankees, wrapping up his 6-year major league career in 1976 with a total of 17 wins, 26 saves, and 309.2 innings pitched.
