Selected 4th overall in the 1970 draft by the Milwaukee Brewers, Porter quickly rose to prominence before finding his absolute individual peak under Whitey Herzog with the Kansas City Royals and later the St. Louis Cardinals.
Porter put together one of the greatest offensive seasons by a modern catcher in 1979 with the Royals. He blasted 20 home runs, drove in 112 runs, and became one of the rare catchers to score 100 runs and walk 100 times in a single season. He batted .291 and finished 9th in AL MVP voting.
After moving to St. Louis as a marquee free agent, Porter put together a legendary October run in 1982. He won both the NLCS MVP and the World Series MVP awards, hitting a clutch .286 in the Fall Classic to lead the “Whiteyball” Cardinals past his former team, the Brewers, for the title.
Porter’s official cardboard debut arrives in this highly graphic 1972 Topps set. He highlights the “1972 Rookie Stars” multi-player panel for the Brewers, centered squarely between pitcher Jerry Bell and pitcher Bob Reynolds.
