Selected 1st overall in the 1985 MLB Draft out of the University of North Carolina by the Milwaukee Brewers, William Wayne “B.J.” Surhoff was one of the most versatile and durable position players of his era.
Beginning his career as an athletic, line-drive hitting catcher, Surhoff successfully transitioned into an everyday third baseman and left fielder. Over an 18-season Major League career (1987–2003) with the Brewers, Orioles, and Braves, Surhoff racked up over 2,300 hits while playing every position on the field except pitcher.
Surhoff was a fundamental cornerstone in Milwaukee before becoming an iconic fan favorite in Baltimore.
1987 Breakthrough Rookie Campaign: Stepped straight into the Brewers’ starting lineup as a rookie backstop, hitting .299 with 137 hits, 21 doubles, and 12 stolen bases in 115 games, finishing 5th in AL Rookie of the Year voting.
Peak 1999 All-Star Season: Turned in a monster career year for the Baltimore Orioles in 1999, batting .308 with 28 home runs, 107 RBIs, 104 runs scored, and 204 hits, earning his lone AL All-Star selection.
Elite Defensive Versatility: Spent 9 seasons behind the plate in Milwaukee before shifting seamlessly to third base and outfield corner spots. He logged over 800 games at catcher, 700 games in left field, and 300 games at third base.
Orioles Hall of Fame: Inducted into the Baltimore Orioles Hall of Fame in 2007, ranking among the franchise’s top all-time outfielders in hits, RBIs, and games played.
