Selected 8th overall in the 1st round of the 1989 MLB Draft by the Chicago Cubs out of Lancaster High School (SC), Timothy Earl Cunningham was an explosive, raw power prospect who stood out as one of the premier high school sluggers in the late 1980s.
Standing 6’2″ and 250 lbs, Cunningham possessed elite raw power and a massive swing. Despite enormous expectations and flashes of light-tower power, a combination of high strikeout rates and severe injuries—including a broken ankle and multiple wrist fractures—kept him from advancing past High-A ball during his 8-season minor league career.
High-A Peak: Hit 19 home runs with the Midwest League’s Peoria Chiefs in 1991, finishing near the top of the league in homers while battling swing-and-miss issues (145 strikeouts).
Injury Setbacks: His development was continually derailed by major injuries, including breaking his right wrist twice and breaking an ankle.
Minor League Totals: Played 8 seasons across the Cubs and Rockies organizations, accumulating 75 home runs and 272 RBIs in 1,775 at-bats.
