Signed as an international amateur free agent by the Florida Marlins in 1992 out of Barranquilla, Colombia, Édgar Enrique Rentería (“The Barranquilla Baby”) was one of the premier big-game shortstops of his generation.
A smooth-fielding, line-drive hitting infielder with high-level base-stealing speed, Rentería played 16 Major League seasons (1996–2011) across stints with Florida, St. Louis, Boston, Atlanta, Detroit, San Francisco, and Cincinnati. Over 2,327 career hits, 294 stolen bases, five All-Star selections, two Gold Gloves, and three Silver Slugger Awards, Rentería secured immortal status as one of only four players in Major League history to hit two World Series–clinching, series-ending hits (joining Yogi Berra, Joe DiMaggio, and Lou Gehrig).
Rentería built a Hall-of-Fame level postseason resume, delivering clutch hits under extreme pressure on baseball’s biggest stage.
1997 World Series Walk-Off: Delivered the iconic, 11th-inning walk-off single off Charles Nagy in Game 7 of the 1997 Fall Classic to secure the Florida Marlins’ first-ever World Series Championship.
2010 World Series MVP with San Francisco: Bounced back late in his career to earn 2010 World Series MVP honors, hitting .412 in the series and smashing a historic, game-winning 3-run home run off Cliff Lee in Game 5 to seal the Giants’ first championship since moving to San Francisco.
St. Louis Cardinals Peak (1999–2004): Established himself as a premier NL shortstop in St. Louis, capturing back-to-back Gold Gloves (2002, 2003) and delivering a career-high .330 AVG with 47 doubles, 100 RBIs, and 34 stolen bases in 2003.
1996 NL Rookie of the Year Runner-Up: Debuted as a 20-year-old phenom, hitting .309 with 16 stolen bases in 106 games to finish second in NL Rookie of the Year voting.
