Willie Lee “Willie” McCovey, often called “Stretch” due to his long arms and reach at first base, was a towering left-handed slugger. He spent the vast majority of his illustrious 22-year Major League Baseball career (1959-1980) with the San Francisco Giants.
Despite playing in just 52 games in his rookie season, He batted an astonishing .354 with 13 home runs and 38 RBIs, earning him the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, McCovey was consistently one of the most feared hitters in baseball. Pitchers often opted to walk him rather than risk his powerful bat, leading to high walk totals. This includes a then-National League record 45 intentional walks in 1969. Also that year he won the National League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award. McCovey was selected to the National League All-Star team six times (1963, 1966, 1968-1971). He finished his career with 521 home runs, ranking him among the all-time leaders. He also hit 18 grand slams, an NL record at the time of his retirement.
Willie McCovey was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986 in his first year of eligibility. His uniform No. 44 was retired by the San Francisco Giants.
Willie McCovey’s 1960 Topps #316 rookie baseball card is a cornerstone of the distinctive 1960 Topps set, which features a horizontal design with both a color portrait and a smaller black-and-white action photograph.

Did You Know? Pitchers feared McCovey so profoundly that they routinely chose to put him on base rather than pitch to him. He led the National League in intentional walks four times and set an NL career record with 260 intentional passes (a mark later broken by Barry Bonds), proving that his mere presence changed managerial strategy.
