Herman Thomas “Tommy” Davis, Jr. was a talented right-handed hitting outfielder and third baseman who enjoyed an 18-year Major League Baseball career (1959-1976). He is best known for his incredibly productive years with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the early 1960s, where he established himself as one of the league’s premier hitters.

Davis was a key offensive force for the Dodgers teams that won two World Series championships in 1963 and 1965. He batted .400 in the 1963 World Series as the Dodgers swept the New York Yankees. He was selected to the National League All-Star team twice (1962, 1963). His career was forever changed just 17 games into the 1965 season when he fractured his ankle sliding into second base. Davis became something of a journeyman, playing for many different teams over his remaining career (11 teams in total). Despite the injury, he remained a valuable hitter, often utilized as a pinch-hitter due to his excellent contact skills. He was also a member of the 1972 Oakland Athletics World Series championship team.

After his playing career, Tommy Davis remained involved in baseball, serving as a coach and scout for various organizations. Tommy Davis’s most widely recognized and collected rookie card is this 1960 Topps #509.
