James Edward “Jim” Gentile, often called “Diamond Jim,” was a powerful left-handed first baseman in Major League Baseball from 1957 to 1966. While his career might be considered somewhat brief in terms of longevity, he had a significant impact during his peak years, especially with the Baltimore Orioles.
In 1961, Gentile had a career-best season, hitting .302 with 46 home runs and 141 RBIs. He finished third in the AL MVP voting behind Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. He was a three-time All-Star (1960, 1961, 1962).
After his playing days, Gentile remained involved in baseball, notably as a minor league executive, and also had stints managing in independent baseball leagues.
