Jim Kaat, also known as “Kitty,” enjoyed one of the longest and most remarkable careers in Major League Baseball history, spanning an incredible 25 seasons from 1959 to 1983. A durable left-handed pitcher, he was known for his consistency, excellent fielding, and eventually, his longevity.
Kaat is one of the rare players to have played in four different decades (1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s). This longevity is a testament to his adaptability and ability to adjust his pitching style and role as he aged. Kaat started his career with the Washington Senators in 1959. When the team relocated and became the Minnesota Twins in 1961, he became a cornerstone of their pitching staff. He led the Twins to the 1965 World Series, where he famously faced off against another Hall of Famer, Sandy Koufax. He won16 consecutive Gold Glove Awards as a pitcher (1962-1977). He finally earned a World Series championship ring as a reliever with the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals.
After retiring as a player, Jim Kaat transitioned into a highly successful and respected career as a broadcaster. He worked for various networks, including the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins, as well as national broadcasts for CBS, NBC, ESPN, and MLB Network.
He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2022.
