Ronald Edward “Ron” Santo was a beloved third baseman who played 15 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB), primarily for the Chicago Cubs (1960-1973). He played a final year with the Chicago White Sox (1974). Santo debuted with the Cubs in 1960 and quickly became a cornerstone of the team, alongside fellow future Hall of Famers Ernie Banks and Billy Williams. Santo was a consistent power hitter with an excellent eye at the plate. He was a nine-time All-Star (1963-1966, 1968, 1969, 1971-1973). Perhaps most remarkably, Ron Santo played his entire career while secretly battling Type 1 diabetes.

After retiring as a player, Ron Santo embarked on an equally beloved career as a radio broadcaster for the Chicago Cubs on WGN. For over 20 years, his passionate, often emotional, and always entertaining commentary endeared him to generations of Cubs fans.

Despite his impressive statistics and five Gold Gloves, he was initially overlooked by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA). However, a tireless campaign by his fans and supporters, finally led to his election by the Golden Era Committee in 2011. The Cubs retired his uniform No. 10 in 2003, and he is immortalized as one of the most significant and beloved figures in franchise history.
