Philip Francis “Phil” Rizzuto, affectionately known as “The Scooter,” was a legendary figure in baseball, renowned for his exceptional play at shortstop for the New York Yankees during their dynasty years and later for a beloved career as a broadcaster. Phil Rizzuto spent his entire 13-year Major League Baseball playing career (1941-1942, 1946-1956) with the New York Yankees. Rizzuto was celebrated as one of the finest defensive shortstops of his era. Despite his relatively small stature (5’6″), he possessed incredible range, quick hands, and a strong, accurate arm.
Rizzuto was finally elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994 by the Veterans Committee, after many years of passionate advocacy from fans and fellow players. His uniform number 10 was retired by the New York Yankees in 1985.
