Del Unser was a professional baseball player who had a career spanning from 1968 to 1982. Primarily an outfielder, he played center field and occasionally first base.
Unser played for several MLB teams, including the Washington Senators (1968-1971), Cleveland Indians (1972), Philadelphia Phillies (1973-1974, 1979-1982), New York Mets (1975-1976), and Montreal Expos (1976-1978). He had two stints with the Phillies.
A notable achievement in his career was being a member of the 1980 Philadelphia Phillies team that won the World Series. He played a key role in that series, contributing crucial doubles as a pinch-hitter in Games 2 and 5 against the Kansas City Royals. Later in his career, particularly with the Phillies, Unser became known for his effectiveness as a pinch-hitter. He notably set a Major League Baseball record by hitting three consecutive pinch-hit home runs in 1979.
After his playing career concluded, Del Unser remained involved in baseball. He served as a minor league instructor, first base coach, and hitting coach for the Philadelphia Phillies from 1985 to 1988. He later became the Phillies’ farm director for nine seasons and also worked as a scout for the team.

Did You Know? Making his debut during the pitch-dominant 1968 “Year of the Pitcher,” Unser took over as Washington’s full-time center fielder. He posted 121 hits, led the American League with 156 games played in center field, and tied for the AL lead with 8 triples. His stellar defense and durability earned him 2nd place in the AL Rookie of the Year voting (behind Stan Bahnsen) and a spot on the 1968 Topps All-Star Rookie Team.
