Roland “Rollie” Glen Fingers was a groundbreaking relief pitcher who redefined the role of the closer in Major League Baseball. Known for his distinctive handlebar mustache, he had a stellar 17-year career from 1968 to 1985.

Fingers primarily played for the Oakland Athletics (1968-1976), where he was a crucial part of their dynasty. He then moved to the San Diego Padres (1977-1980) and finished his career with the Milwaukee Brewers (1981-1982, 1984-1985). He was a key component of the Oakland Athletics teams that won three consecutive World Series titles from 1972-1974. He was named the 1974 World Series MVP.

In the strike-shortened 1981 season, Fingers had arguably his most dominant year with the Milwaukee Brewers. He led the American League with 28 saves, posted a microscopic 1.04 ERA, and earned both the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award and the AL Cy Young Award, a rare feat for a relief pitcher. His consistent excellence was recognized with seven All-Star selections (1973–1976, 1978, 1981, 1982).

Fingers was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992. Both the Oakland Athletics and Milwaukee Brewers have retired his number 34.

Perhaps as famous as his pitching prowess was his distinctive handlebar mustache. It became his trademark and a symbol of his individuality and the rebellious spirit of those “Swingin’ A’s” teams.

Rollie Fingers’ rookie card is this 1969 Topps #597 A.L. Rookie Stars. This card features Fingers alongside other American League rookies Bob Floyd and Larry Burchart.
