The baseball career of Andy Seminick spanned 15 years in Major League Baseball (MLB), primarily as a catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies and the Cincinnati Reds/Redlegs.
Seminick was an integral part of the 1950 Philadelphia Phillies team known as the “Whiz Kids,” who captured the franchise’s first National League pennant since 1915. At 29, he was one of the older players on the young squad, earning him the nickname “Grandpa Whiz” by Philadelphia baseball writers for his work handling the young pitching staff. He was selected to his only All-Star Game in 1949, voted by fans as the National League’s starting catcher.
After retiring as a player in 1957, Andy Seminick remained involved in baseball for the Philadelphia Phillies organization. He served as a coach for the Phillies and managed 11 minor-league affiliates in their system. He worked as a scout and a roving minor-league instructor, helping develop players like Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt and Bob Boone. Seminick also served as the first head baseball coach for the Florida Tech Panthers from 1961 to 1977, compiling 276 wins. The university later renamed its baseball field Andy Seminick Field in his honor.
