Victor John Angelo “Vic” Raschi was a powerful right-handed starting pitcher whose formidable fastball earned him the nickname “The Springfield Rifle.” He was a key pillar of the legendary New York Yankees dynasty of the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Raschi played for the following teams, New York Yankees (1946–1953), St. Louis Cardinals (1954–1955) and Kansas City Athletics (1955). He was one-third of the Yankees’ dominant starting rotation, alongside Allie Reynolds and Eddie Lopat. He was a 6-time World Series champion with the Yankees, winning titles in 1947 and an unprecedented five straight from 1949 through 1953.
Raschi served in the U.S. Army Air Force as a physical training instructor during World War II, delaying his Major League debut until age 27.
He was surprisingly sold to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1954 after a contract dispute with Yankees General Manager George Weiss. He finished his career with the Cardinals and Athletics before retiring in 1955.
