Rocco Domenico “Rocky” Colavito Jr. was an American professional baseball player, coach, and television sports commentator. An All-Star outfielder, he was a fan favorite for the Cleveland Indians.
In 1959, Calavito led the American League with 42 home runs. On June 10, 1959, he became the eighth player in MLB history to hit four home runs in a single game. He finished his career with 374 home runs and 1,159 runs batted in. In 1965, he became the first outfielder in AL history to complete a season with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. He was also a nine-time All-Star.
He was inducted into the Cleveland Guardians Hall of Fame in 2006.
One of the most notable events of his career was the trade on April 17, 1960, in which the Cleveland Indians traded him to the Detroit Tigers for Harvey Kuenn. Colavito had been the American League home run leader the previous year, while Kuenn was the batting champion. The trade was highly unpopular with Cleveland fans and is widely considered to have initiated a “curse” that coincided with a long period of mediocrity for the team.
