Edwin Donald “Duke” Snider was a prominent center fielder whose career spanned from 1947 to 1964, most notably with the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a powerful left-handed slugger and a key member of the “Boys of Summer” Dodgers teams of the 1950s.

Snider was synonymous with Brooklyn baseball in the 1950s, a beloved figure for the passionate Dodger fan base. He played a crucial role in the Dodgers winning their first World Series title in Brooklyn in 1955. Known for his graceful, powerful left-handed swing, Snider consistently hit for power. He achieved a remarkable feat of hitting 40 or more home runs in five consecutive seasons (1953-1957).

Beyond his bat, Snider was an excellent defensive center fielder with a strong throwing arm and good running ability. He was selected as an All-Star eight times during his career. During his peak, Snider was often compared to other great New York center fielders of the era, Willie Mays of the Giants and Mickey Mantle of the Yankees, sparking intense debates among fans.

After his long tenure with the Dodgers (including their move to Los Angeles), he played one season each for the New York Mets (1963) and the San Francisco Giants (1964) before retiring. He hit the last home run ever in Ebbets Field on September 22, 1957.

Duke Snider was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980. His number 4 has been retired by the Los Angeles Dodgers. After his playing career, Snider also managed in the minor leagues for the Dodgers and San Diego Padres, and had a lengthy career as a broadcaster for the Montreal Expos.
