Thurman Lee Munson was an American professional baseball catcher who played his entire 11-season Major League Baseball (MLB) career with the New York Yankees from 1969 until his death in 1979.

Munson was the fourth overall pick in the 1968 MLB draft. He made his major league debut on August 8, 1969.  In his first full season, he batted .302 and won the American League Rookie of the Year award. He was selected to the All-Star team seven times (1971, 1973–1978). Known for his outstanding fielding, he earned Gold Gloves in three consecutive years (1973–1975). In 1976, he was named the American League Most Valuable Player, batting .302 with 17 home runs and 105 RBIs. He was named captain of the Yankees in 1976, the first player to hold that title since Lou Gehrig. He helped lead the Yankees to three consecutive World Series appearances from 1976 to 1978, winning championships in 1977 and 1978.

Munson was an exceptional defensive catcher, leading the league in complete games caught three times in the 1970s. He also led the league in innings caught four times.

Thurman Munson’s career was tragically cut short on August 2, 1979, when he died in a plane crash while practicing landings in his private jet at Akron–Canton Airport. The Yankees immediately retired his uniform number 15 and dedicated a plaque to him in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.

Did You Know? Though known as the gruff, ultimate “dirt-dog” catcher on the field, Thurman Munson was an incredibly forward-thinking businessman who earned his commercial pilot’s license so he could fly himself home to Ohio on off-days to spend more time with his family. To secure his post-baseball life, he also co-founded a highly successful real estate leasing company and built a massive, multi-million-dollar corporate office park near Canton, Ohio, while still in the prime of his playing career
