Ewell “The Whip” Blackwell was a formidable right-handed pitcher who showcased moments of electrifying dominance in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Known for his distinctive sidearm delivery and blazing fastball. Blackwell played for 10 seasons in Major League Baseball (1942, 1946-1953, 1955). He spent the bulk of his career with the Cincinnati Reds (1942, 1946-1952), also pitching for the New York Yankees (1952-1953) and the Kansas City Athletics (1955). His career was interrupted by military service in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Over his career, Blackwell was a 6-time All-Star (1946-1951). He was known for his high strikeout numbers and his ability to induce fear in opposing batters due to his whip-like delivery and velocity. He was also a World Series champion with the New York Yankees in 1952, contributing in relief.
