The baseball career of Dr. Robert William “Bobby” Brown is unique, not just for his contributions on the field, but for the remarkable way he successfully pursued two demanding careers simultaneously: Major League Baseball player and medical student. He was a member of four World Series championship teams with the Yankees (1947, 1949, 1950, and 1951).
The defining aspect of Bobby Brown’s playing career was his simultaneous study of medicine. While playing for the Yankees, Brown attended Tulane University Medical School in New Orleans, often studying his medical texts in the clubhouse or on road trips. He took classes during the off-season and was known to carry his books everywhere.
Brown earned his medical degree (M.D.) in 1950. He retired from baseball in 1954 at the age of 29 to begin his residency and pursue his career as a cardiologist.
