Curt Simmons played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1947–1950, 1952–1960), St. Louis Cardinals (1960–1966), Chicago Cubs (1966–1967), and California Angels (1967). He was a Pitcher (Left-Handed).

Simmons was a high-school phenom who signed with his hometown Phillies for a large bonus in 1947. He quickly became one of the anchors of their rotation alongside Hall of Famer Robin Roberts. In 1950, at the age of 21, Simmons had a breakout season, going 17–8 with a 3.40 ERA. He was a dominant force for the young “Whiz Kids” team that battled for the National League pennant. As the Phillies approached the end of the season in a tight race with the Brooklyn Dodgers, Simmons, a member of the National Guard, was called to active military service due to the outbreak of the Korean War. He missed the final, dramatic days of the regular season and the entire World Series, which the Phillies lost to the Yankees in a four-game sweep. His absence was widely considered a major factor in the outcome.

Upon his return from military service, Simmons re-established himself as a top National League pitcher. In 1952, he returned to go 14-8 with a superb 2.82 ERA, leading the league with six shutouts, and earning his first All-Star selection. He was selected as an All-Star three times with the Phillies (1952, 1953, 1957), starting the game twice.

At age 35, Simmons was a starter on the 1964 World Series Champion Cardinals team that defeated the Yankees. This gave him the World Series ring that had eluded him with the Phillies 14 years earlier. Simmons was the last living member of the 1950 “Whiz Kids” team when he passed away in 2022. His long career, which spanned the pre- and post-Korean War baseball eras, cemented his place in Phillies history.

He was inducted into the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame in 1993.
