The baseball career of Early “Gus” Wynn was one of incredible longevity, spanning 23 seasons, and was defined by his intimidating mound presence and his relentless pursuit of pitching milestones.

Wynn was a member of these teams during his career: Washington Senators (1939, 1941–1944, 1946–1948), Cleveland Indians (1949–1957, 1963), and Chicago White Sox (1958–1962).

Early Wynn is one of only a few pitchers in MLB history to reach the coveted 300-win mark, a feat that marked the pinnacle of his career. Following a trade to the Cleveland Indians in 1948, Wynn learned new pitches (including a curveball and knuckleball) from pitching coach Mel Harder, which helped transform him into a dominant pitcher in the 1950s.

The bulk of Wynn’s success came after the age of 30, showcasing his endurance and dedication. He won a major league-best 23 games in 1954 for the Indians, helping them capture the American League pennant.  At the age of 39, he led the American League with 22 wins for the “Go-Go” Chicago White Sox and won the Cy Young Award, helping them win their first pennant in 40 years. He was named to nine All-Star Games.

Wynn retired after the 1963 season and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. He finished his career as one of baseball’s most respected and feared competitors.
