Granville Wilbur “Granny” Hamner was an American professional baseball shortstop and second baseman in Major League Baseball (MLB). He is best known for his long career with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he spent 15.5 seasons (1944-1959). He also played briefly for the Cleveland Indians (1959) and the Kansas City Athletics (1962).
Hamner was a key player on the 1950 National League champion Philadelphia Phillies, famously known as the “Whiz Kids.” This team, composed of many young players.
Hamner played both shortstop and second base throughout his career. He was named team captain of the Phillies in March 1952. He was a three-time All-Star, earning selections from 1952 to 1954. Notably, he was the National League’s starting shortstop in the 1952 All-Star Game, played on his home field at Shibe Park in Philadelphia.
Although primarily an infielder, Hamner dabbled in pitching. He had some success as a pitcher in high school and during a 13-month stint in the Army. He appeared briefly with the Kansas City Athletics as a pitcher in 1962, and also pitched in some games for the Phillies in 1956-1957.
After his playing career, Hamner managed in the minor league systems for both the Kansas City Athletics and the Phillies. He was inducted into the Philadelphia Phillies Wall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame (1981).
