Roy Edward Sievers possessed what was widely considered by contemporaries to be “the sweetest right-handed swing” of 1950s baseball.

A devastating, pull-hitting slugger, Sievers was the definitive bright spot and primary offensive force for a series of struggling Washington Senators teams. Blending formidable power with exceptional discipline at the plate, he routinely challenged the elite American League pitching staffs of the era. A Rookie of the Year winner and a multi-time home run champion, Sievers stood as one of the era’s most universally respected middle-of-the-order run producers.

Sievers burst onto the major league scene in 1949 with the St. Louis Browns. Exhibiting precocious plate coverage and power, he batted .306 with 16 home runs and 91 RBIs. For his immediate impact, he was honored as the inaugural recipient of the American League Rookie of the Year Award.

However, a severe arm injury suffered while attempting an outfield catch limited his effectiveness over the next three seasons, prompting the Browns to trade him to the Washington Senators in 1954. Freed from the outfield turf and moving primarily to first base, Sievers completely rebuilt his swing and unlocked his legendary peak power form.

Teams Played For: St. Louis Browns (1949–1953), Washington Senators (1954–1959), Chicago White Sox (1960–1961), Philadelphia Phillies (1962–1964), Washington Senators (1964–1965).

Career Totals: 1,662 games, 1,514 hits, 318 home runs, 1,147 RBIs, and a .267 lifetime batting average.

Accolades: 5-time AL All-Star, 1949 AL Rookie of the Year, 1957 AL Home Run and RBI Leader.

Did You Know?  In Washington, Sievers transformed Griffith Stadium—historically an immense, cavernous park that penalized right-handed power hitters—into his personal launching pad.

His absolute career pinnacle arrived during the 1957 season, a magnificent campaign where he out-slugged the absolute finest players in the American League:

The Slugging Titles: Sievers captured the AL Triple Crown’s power legs, leading the league with 42 home runs and 114 RBIs while batting a robust .301. Unbelievably, he eclipsed legendary contemporaries Mickey Mantle and Ted Williams for the home run crown.
