Billy Loes (1929–2010) was a highly talented, colorful, and eccentric right-handed pitcher who became a key figure in the legendary “Boys of Summer” Brooklyn Dodgers teams of the 1950s. Known as much for his blunt, unfiltered quotes as he was for his sharp breaking ball, Loes spent 11 seasons in the majors (1950–1961), compiling an 80–63 record and playing in three World Series.
The Quirky Legend of Bay Ridge
Born in Brooklyn, Loes grew up just miles from Ebbets Field and possessed a unique personality that endeared him to sports writers and fans alike.
Before the 1952 World Series against the powerhouse New York Yankees, Loes famously predicted that the Yankees would win the series in six games. When confronted by his furious manager, Charlie Dressen, Loes defended himself by saying he actually thought the Yankees would win in five games, but wanted to be nice to his teammates. (The Dodgers lost in seven).
The Misplayed Grounder: During Game 6 of that same 1952 Series, a ground ball hit by Vic Raschi bounced off Loes’s knee for an error, allowing a run to score. When reporters asked how he missed it, Loes gave a legendary defense: “I lost it in the sun.” It remains one of the only times a pitcher claimed to lose a ground ball in the sun.
Despite his eccentricities, Loes was highly effective. He won 13 games in 1952, 14 in 1953, and was a key piece of the beloved 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers squad that finally brought a World Series championship to Flatbush.
