Nicknamed “Silent George” for his lifelong policy of not speaking to the media, George Hendrick let his bat do the talking. He was a 4-time All-Star, a 2-time Silver Slugger, and a crucial piece of two World Championship teams: the 1972 Oakland Athletics and the 1982 St. Louis Cardinals.

Hendrick was highly productive across multiple eras, finishing his career with a .278 batting average, 267 home runs, and 1,111 RBIs.  He was one of the first players to smash 100 home runs in both the American League (primarily with Cleveland) and the National League (with St. Louis).

While Whitey Herzog’s “Whiteyball” Cardinals were famous for speed and defense, Hendrick brought the necessary middle-of-the-order muscle, leading the team in home runs every year from 1980 through 1983.

Beyond his stats, Hendrick holds a unique spot in baseball style history—he was the very first Major League player to buck tradition and wear his pant legs all the way down to his ankles, a look that defines the modern game today.

For collectors, this Hendrick’s definitive rookie card is found in the classic, psychadelic-bordered 1972 Topps set.
