Steve Stone is widely recognized today as one of the sharpest, most analytical minds in the broadcast booth. However, before his decades-long television career with both Chicago franchises, he spent 11 seasons on the mound. He put together a highly resilient Major League career (1971–1981) that culminated in one of the most unexpected, spectacular single-season pitching masterpieces of the modern era.
Stone was a dependable, middle-of-the-rotation starter for most of the 1970s, moving between the Giants, White Sox, and Cubs. In 1979, he signed with Earl Weaver’s Baltimore Orioles, a move that completely transformed his career. Relying heavily on a devastating, sharp-breaking curveball that Weaver famously worried he threw too often, Stone caught lightning in a bottle in 1980.
- The 25-Win Campaign: Stone led the Major Leagues with an unbelievable 25–7 record, anchoring an Orioles staff that won 100 games.
- The Midsummer Classic: He was named the American League’s starting pitcher in the 1980 All-Star Game, throwing three perfect innings.
- The Hardware: He comfortably won the 1980 AL Cy Young Award, beating out future Hall of Famer Goose Gossage.
The immense physical toll of throwing that signature curveball so frequently took its styling cost. Stone suffered severe tendinitis in his pitching arm the following season, forcing him into retirement at age 34 just one year removed from winning baseball’s highest pitching honor.

Did You Know? Stone holds a unique place in Chicago baseball lore, having played for both the White Sox and the Cubs. In 1973, he was a key piece in one of the most famous and highly debated trades in the history of the Windy City rivalry.
The Cubs traded Stone, alongside relief pitcher Ken Frailing and outfielder Steve Swisher, to the South Side in exchange for third baseman Ron Santo. While Santo was a beloved icon on the North Side, his brief stint with the White Sox was a disappointment, and he retired at the end of the season.
