As a 21-year-old rookie, Welch gained instant national fame during Game 2 of the 1978 World Series. Brought in to face New York Yankees slugger Reggie Jackson with two outs and two runners on in the top of the 9th, Welch engaged in a legendary, nine-pitch battle. He ultimately struck Jackson out swinging to save a 4-3 victory for the Dodgers.
While anchoring the powerhouse 1990 Oakland A’s rotation alongside Dave Stewart, Welch went 27-6 with a 2.95 ERA. His 27 wins remain the highest single-season total by any MLB pitcher since Steve Carlton won 27 in 1972, comfortably earning him the American League Cy Young Award.
This 1979 rookie card features a classic portrait of a young Welch in his powder-blue Dodgers road uniform, the card is highly sought after by vintage hobbyists looking to complete late-70s sets or Dodger team collections.
