Jim Gott was a professional baseball pitcher who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 14 seasons, from 1982 to 1995. A right-handed pitcher, he pitched for the Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Los Angeles Dodgers.

Gott made his MLB debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1982. He earned his first major league win in May 1982 against Hall of Famer Jim Palmer, a game that also marked the start of Cal Ripken Jr.’s record consecutive games played streak.

Gott was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1987. In 1988, he had a standout season, recording 34 saves, which was a Pirates franchise single-season record at the time and ranked him second in the National League.

Gott signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a free agent after the 1989 season. He served as a setup pitcher and closer for the Dodgers, recording 25 saves in 1993, which placed him 9th in the National League.

After retiring as a player, Gott remained involved in baseball. He co-hosted “Dodger Talk,” a pre- and post-game radio show for the Los Angeles Dodgers for three years. He then moved into coaching, serving as a pitching coach for the Arizona League Angels (a Rookie-level affiliate) in 2010-2012, and then as the Angels’ minor league pitching coordinator from 2013-2017. From 2018 through 2020, he was the bullpen coach for the Philadelphia Phillies. More recently, he was named pitching coach for the AZL Athletics for the 2024 season.
