Gary Redus was a speedy, versatile outfielder and infielder who played for 13 seasons in Major League Baseball (1982–1994).
Minor League Legend: In 1978, while playing for the Billings Mustangs (Reds affiliate), Redus hit .462, which remains one of the highest single-season batting average in professional baseball history.
Stolen Base Threat: He was a premier base stealer, swiping 322 bases over his career. His best season was 1987 with the Chicago White Sox, where he stole 52 bases.
Versatility: He was a valuable utility player who could play all three outfield positions as well as first and second base.
Redus was widely known by his nickname, “Paylo,” which was given to him by family members as a child. He had his highest batting average (.288) in 1993, at age 36, playing for the Texas Rangers.
Following his playing career, Redus remained active in baseball, serving as a coach, manager, and scout for various organizations, including the Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
