Pettis is widely regarded as one of the finest defensive outfielders of his generation. His range was so extensive that he earned the nickname “Pac-Man” for the way he seemed to “eat up” every ball hit into the gaps.

He secured five Gold Glove Awards (1985, 1986, 1988–1990) across three different teams, a rare feat that speaks to his consistent excellence regardless of the ballpark. California Angels (1982–1987), Detroit Tigers (1988–1989, 1992), Texas Rangers (1990–1991), San Diego Padres (1992).

Before the era of Statcast, Pettis was the gold standard for the “homer-robbing” catch. He famously practiced these leaping grabs with Angels coach Jimmie Reese, who would use a fungo bat to specifically challenge Pettis to snare balls over the wall.

If his glove didn’t beat you, his legs would. Pettis was a high-volume base stealer who remained a threat for over a decade. He finished his career in the top tier of all-time speedsters, including back-to-back 50+ steal seasons in 1985 and 1986 with 354 career stolen bases. For nearly 20 years, Pettis held the Angels’ franchise record for stolen bases (later broken by Chone Figgins in 2007).

He wasn’t just fast; he was smart. Through 1988, he maintained a career success rate of approximately 80%, making him one of the most efficient leadoff threats in the American League.

After retiring with over 1,100 games played, Pettis became one of the most respected coaches in the game. He has won two World Series rings as a coach with the Houston Astros (2017, 2022) and is frequently cited as the architect behind some of the league’s best modern outfield defenses.
