Eric Davis is a former American baseball center fielder, best known for his time with the Cincinnati Reds. Nicknamed “Eric the Red,” he was one of the most exciting players of his era, celebrated for his rare combination of power and speed.
Davis played for 17 seasons (1984-2001) for six different teams, most notably the Cincinnati Reds. While injuries often hampered his playing time, he was a superstar when healthy, showcasing a unique blend of athleticism that drew comparisons to Willie Mays.
He was a key member of the Cincinnati Reds’ “Nasty Boys” team that swept the heavily favored Oakland Athletics. In 1987, Davis became the first player in Major League history to hit at least 30 home runs and steal 50 bases in a single season. Over his career, he was a two-time All-Star (1987, 1989), won three Gold Glove Awards (1987–1989) and two Silver Slugger Awards (1987, 1989).
In 1997, while playing for the Baltimore Orioles, Davis was diagnosed with colon cancer. He made a remarkable comeback, returning to the field just six weeks after surgery. For his courage and determination, he was honored with the Roberto Clemente Award that year.
