In the early 90s, Baerga wasn’t just good; he was putting up numbers that second basemen simply didn’t achieve back then. In 1992 and 1993, he became the first second baseman since Rogers Hornsby (in 1922!) to record back-to-back seasons with 200+ hits, 20+ home runs, and 100+ RBIs.
On April 8, 1993, he became the first player in MLB history to hit a home run from both sides of the plate in the same inning. He was a 3-time All-Star and 2-time Silver Slugger, serving as the middle-infield anchor for the legendary 1995 “Jacob’s Field” team that went to the World Series.
Baerga’s peak was brilliant but relatively short. In 1996, in a move that shocked Cleveland fans, he was traded to the New York Mets for Jeff Kent and José Vizcaíno.
Whether it was nagging injuries (specifically his knees) or the weight of New York expectations, Baerga’s production for the Mets dipped significantly. He never regained that 200-hit form. He spent the later years of his career as a valuable veteran presence and pinch-hitting specialist for the Red Sox, Diamondbacks, and Nationals, eventually retiring in 2005.
Carlos Baerga remains one of the most beloved figures in Cleveland sports history. He was inducted into the Cleveland Guardians (Indians) Hall of Fame in 2013. He is a frequent analyst for MLB and works as an ambassador for the Guardians, often seen around the ballpark with his signature wide grin.
