A blue-chip prospect with a legendary baseball pedigree, José Cruz Jr. was one of the most highly anticipated young toolsy outfielders of the late 1990s. The son of Houston Astros icon José Cruz, the younger Cruz starred at Rice University before being selected 3rd overall in the 1995 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.
Known for his rare mix of power, speed, and outfield range, Cruz Jr. enjoyed a 12-year Major League career (1997–2008), leaving his mark as a 30-30 club member and Gold Glove winner.
Cruz Jr. burst onto the scene in 1997 as an instant impact bat, though his rookie season featured one of the most famous midseason blockbusters of the decade.
The Shocking Rookie Trade: After bashing 12 home runs in 49 games for Seattle to start 1997, the Mariners traded the 23-year-old phenom to the Toronto Blue Jays in July for relievers Mike Timlin and Paul Spoljaric to bolster their bullpen for a playoff push. Cruz Jr. didn’t blink, finishing with 26 home runs overall and placing 2nd in AL Rookie of the Year voting behind Nomar Garciaparra.
The 2001 30-30 Season: In 2001 with Toronto, Cruz Jr. put together a career year, launching 34 home runs and stealing 32 bases. He became only the second player in Blue Jays franchise history (after Shawn Green in 1998) to join the exclusive 30-30 Club.
Gold Glove Defense: Known for his strong arm and exceptional coverage, he captured a Gold Glove Award with the San Francisco Giants in 2003, committing just two errors all season in right field.
