Travis Lee Hafner—affectionately dubbed “Pronk”—was one of the most feared, physically imposing designated hitters in baseball during the mid-2000s.
A native of North Dakota, Hafner anchored the Cleveland Indians’ offense during an era of high-scoring baseball. With a massive frame and an incredibly powerful left-handed swing, he terrorized American League pitching with a rare combination of elite raw power and excellent plate patience. At his absolute peak, he matched some of the greatest offensive stretches in franchise history, leaving an indelible mark on Cleveland sports folklore.
Though chronic shoulder injuries sapped his elite power during his late 30s, Hafner finished his 12-year career with elite lifetime rate statistics.

Did You Know? The Birth of “Pronk”: Drafted by the Texas Rangers in 1996, Hafner found himself blocked at first base by Rafael Palmeiro. In December 2002, Cleveland acquired him in what would become a highly lopsided trade for pitcher Ryan Drese and catcher Einar Díaz.
Upon arriving in Cleveland, teammate Bill Selby noted that Hafner looked like a cross between a “Project” and a “Donk” (slang for a big, goofy player). The blend stuck, and “Pronk” became one of the most iconic, beloved nicknames in baseball. The moniker became so popular in Northeast Ohio that a local meat company launched a “Pronk Bar” beef jerky, and fans routinely packed the stadium wearing shirts celebrating the big DH.
