José Bernabé Reyes was an absolute lightning bolt on the diamond, a dynamic switch-hitting shortstop whose game-changing speed and infectious energy electrified Queens throughout the 2000s.
Stepping into a lineage of premier New York shortstops, Reyes brought a singular, high-octane dimension to the New York Mets. The Stolen Base Trilogy: Reyes ruled the National League basepaths with absolute authority, leading the league in stolen bases for three consecutive seasons (2005–2007). He eclipsed the 60-steal mark in each of those years, peaking with a staggering 78 stolen bases in 2007—the highest single-season tally by a Met in franchise history.
The Triple Threat: Utilizing the spacious dimensions of Shea Stadium and later Citi Field, Reyes led the major leagues in triples four times, routinely hitting deep drives into the gaps and sliding into third base completely untouched.
