Joe Garagiola (1926–2016) had a baseball career that is a famous example of a player whose post-playing life eclipsed his time on the field. He was an adequate catcher for nine seasons but became a beloved national figure through his decades as a witty and insightful sportscaster and television personality.
Garagiola played for the St. Louis Cardinals (1946–1951), Pittsburgh Pirates (1951–1953), Chicago Cubs (1953–1954) and New York Giants (1954).
Garagiola’s personal highlight came as a rookie with the 1946 World Series Champion Cardinals. He batted a stellar .316 in the series against the Boston Red Sox, including a 4-for-5 performance in Game 4.
After retiring as a player at age 28, Garagiola became a broadcasting icon, using his humor, folksy charm, and insider knowledge to connect with millions of fans. His 1960 book, Baseball Is a Funny Game, was a national bestseller and launched his career as a national personality.
