Mickey Charles Mantle (1931-1995), also known as “The Mick” and “The Commerce Comet,” was a legendary American professional baseball player who spent his entire 18-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career (1951-1968) with the New York Yankees. Widely regarded as one of the greatest players and sluggers of all time.
While still in high school, Mantle’s prodigious talent caught the eye of a Yankees scout, leading to his professional debut in the minor leagues. A serious leg injury from a high school football incident plagued him for his entire life and was a precursor to the many physical ailments he would endure.
Mantle was the face of the Yankees during a dominant era for the franchise. He helped lead them to seven World Series championships and 12 American League pennants during his tenure. His arguably greatest season came in 1956 when he achieved the coveted Triple Crown, leading the American League in batting average (.353), home runs (52), and runs batted in (130). Mantle was named the American League Most Valuable Player three times (1956, 1957, 1962). He holds numerous World Series records, including most home runs (18), RBIs (40), runs scored (42), and walks (43). He played in an incredible 12 World Series. He was selected to 20 All-Star teams throughout his career. And in 1962, he also showcased his defensive skills by winning a Gold Glove Award as a center fielder.
Despite a career constantly hampered by injuries, Mantle’s sheer talent and determination allowed him to achieve remarkable feats. He was admired for his humility and friendly demeanor, endearing him to teammates and fans alike. After his retirement in 1969, his iconic number 7 was retired by the New York Yankees. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974 on his first ballot.
Mickey Mantle passed away in 1995 at the age of 63, but his legacy as one of baseball’s most electrifying and beloved players continues to resonate.
