James Riley “Milkman Jim” Turner (1903–1998) was a fascinating baseball figure whose career spanned several decades as a player, coach, and manager. Known as “Milkman Jim” because he actually operated a milk route in his native Tennessee during the off seasons, Turner was one of the most successful “old rookies” in baseball history, making his MLB debut at the age of 33.

After a productive playing career, he transitioned into one of the most respected and successful pitching coaches of his generation, helping guide Casey Stengel’s New York Yankees during their golden era of dominance in the 1950s.

The 1937 Rookie Masterpiece: Making his MLB debut in 1937 with the Boston Bees (Braves) at age 33, Turner put together an astonishing season. He went 20–11 with a league-leading 2.51 ERA and threw 24 complete games. He narrowly missed out on rookie honors but established himself as an elite starter.

The World Series Rings: He later transitioned to the bullpen, pitching for the powerhouse Cincinnati Reds and the New York Yankees, winning World Series titles as a player in 1940 (Reds) and 1943 (Yankees).

The Legendary Coach: Turner served as the pitching coach for the Yankees from 1949 to 1959 and again from 1966 to 1973. He oversaw the development and success of legends like Whitey Ford, Allie Reynolds, Vic Raschi, and Mel Stottlemyre, earning another nine World Series rings as a coach.
