Burks immediately made an impact with the Red Sox, becoming just the third player in franchise history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in a season. He earned a Gold Glove Award and his first Silver Slugger Award in 1990. After leaving the Red Sox, Burks had a career resurgence with the Colorado Rockies. Playing for the “Blake Street Bombers” in the mid-1990s, he had his best season in 1996. That year, he led the National League in runs, slugging percentage, total bases, and extra-base hits, while finishing second in batting average with a .344 mark. He was also a National League All-Star and won his second Silver Slugger Award.
Burks went on to play for the San Francisco Giants and Cleveland Indians, where he transitioned to a designated hitter role later in his career and continued to provide consistent production. He concluded his career where it began, with a final season with the Boston Red Sox in 2004.
Ellis Burks is a Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame inductee (2012).
