Sutcliffe’s career spanned 18 seasons (1976–1994), playing for the Dodgers, Indians, Cubs, Orioles, and Cardinals.
The 1979 Rookie of the Year: He burst onto the scene with the LA Dodgers, winning 17 games and the NL Rookie of the Year award.
The “Magic” 1984 Season: This is the stuff of legend. Traded from the Indians to the Cubs in June, Sutcliffe went on an incredible tear. He went 16–1 with a 2.69 ERA for Chicago, leading them to their first postseason appearance in 39 years. He won the NL Cy Young Award unanimously—despite playing the first half of the season in the American League.
The All-Star & Workhorse: A three-time All-Star, Sutcliffe was a classic “innings eater.” He led the league in wins (1987) and starts (1982), consistently pitching over 200 innings a year when healthy.
Sutcliffe was a “power sinker” pitcher. He used his height to create a steep downward angle on his pitches, inducing heavy ground balls and broken bats. He was also a fierce competitor who wasn’t afraid to pitch inside to protect his teammates.
Since retiring, Sutcliffe has become a staple of baseball broadcasting, working for decades as a color analyst for ESPN.
