Andersen’s career was a marathon, spanning 17 seasons (1975, 1977–1994) with six different teams, most notably the Phillies and the Astros.
Andersen pitched until he was 41 years old. He was the ultimate “rubber arm,” appearing in 699 games—all but one of them coming out of the bullpen. In 1990, the Houston Astros traded a veteran Andersen to the Boston Red Sox for a minor league prospect named Jeff Bagwell. Andersen pitched brilliantly for Boston down the stretch (1.23 ERA), but Bagwell went on to become a Hall of Famer, making this one of the most lopsided trades in MLB history.
He is the only player to play for both the 1983 “Wheeze Kids” Phillies and the 1993 “Macho Row” Phillies. He was a vital bridge to the closer in both pennant-winning seasons.
Since 1998, Andersen has been a beloved color commentator for the Philadelphia Phillies. His broadcast style is much like his pitching: candid, slightly grumpy, incredibly knowledgeable, and always funny.
Larry Andersen shares this 1980 Topps “Future Stars” card with fellow teammates Bobby Cuellar and Sandy Wihtol.
